After you have downloaded avast! Pro, follow the procedure below: - close all programs which are open - launch the downloaded program called "setupfre.exe"
During installation: - select "basic installation" (which installs all program functionalities except skins)
Once installation has been completed, you are asked if you want to restart your computer (you must do this in order for the program to work) and carry out a scan of your hard disk (you can opt to do this but be aware that the virus database (list of viruses) is not up to date).
After avast! Pro has been installed, 2 new icons will appear in the notification area close to the clock in the bottom right corner of your screen: -on the right = an icon for accessing avast! Pro's settings -on the left = a VRDB icon (for saving files before infection)
You can only keep one icon: - right click on the avast! Pro icon located on the left - select "merge with the main avast! Pro icon"
Finally, in order to obtain maximum security, LEFT click on the avast! Pro icon and a new window will open. Move the cursor to the "high" position, which will change the protection level of the resident protection to the highest possible level.

Order confirmation and tracking e-mails are part of a partially automated system. Below are a list of the most common reasons why you might not have received e-mails about your avast! order: the e-mail address entered when you created your order is not valid. If this is the case, the email would have been sent back to us. Your e-mail server is unavailable or reports errors when it receives the e-mail containing information about the processing of your order. It is possible that this e-mail will be delivered later, normally delivery is attempted every 4 hours for a few days. Your e-mail box is full, our e-mails cannot be delivered. You use anti spam filters, our e-mails have been intercepted and marked as Spam. You can add our contact address to your list of authorised addresses to resolve the problem: contact@avastedition.com. Your e-mail provider is AOL, our emails have probably been marked as Spam by AOL's filter - please contact the internet service provider.

First of all, you don't need to uninstall your Family edition. After buying the Professional edition you will receive a new licence key. All you have to do next is connect to the internet and insert your new licence key in avast! Avast! will download the extra components and immediately update your edition to the Professional edition.
|

First of all, you must check that your licence has really expired. To check this, take the following steps: 1. Right click on the blue avast! pro "a" icon which can be found in the notification area, next to the clock (standing for resident protection). 2. Click on "about avast! Pro..." 3. In the window which opens, scroll down to the registration key line. 4. You will find "updates expiry date" Compare this to the actual date.. If the "updates expiry date" is older than the actual date then your licence has really expired and you will need to enter a new registration key. This means that: if you use avast! Professional edition, you will need to buy a new licence key. You will obtain a 30% discount for renewing your licence key. To obtain this discount when placing your order you must indicate in the comments field that you are renewing your licence and insert your old key or your Alwil Software customer no. It is quicker for us to process your order if you include your old key no. If you use avast! pro Family edition, we encourage you to try the Professional edition which provides a higher level of protection and very practical advanced functionalities. Once you have obtained the new registration key, enter it in avast! Pro. If your licence key seems to be valid (updates expiry date is in the future), you should check the date of your operating system. It is probably not configured correctly. In this situation you must correctly configure your system and enter your new registration key.

This can happen when avast! Pro detects that the system's date has been tampered with. Check the date, alter it if necessary and reinsert your new key in avast! Pro.

No, there isn't a problem. Some files are locked by the operating system, others are protected by a password, etc. These files cannot be scanned which is normal.
|
|

The "start up scan" is only available for Windows systems based on NT technology (Windows NT, 2000, XP, 2003...).

If you use Windows XP or Vista, please ensure that the icon (blue ball) has not been hidden. If this is the case, right click on the taskbar and select "properties." A dialogue box "properties of the taskbar and start up menu" should appear. Then uncheck the box "hide inactive icons." If you are not using Windows XP, OR the previous solution does not fix the problem, manually execute the file ashDisp.exe which can be found in the folder: (C:Program FilesALWIL Softwareavast! Pro4). This should restore the icon. If it disappears again after restarting the computer, create a shortcut in the "start up" folder.

First of all, update your system via Windows Update to ensure that your "RPC" service is working. Restart your computer to see if the problem has been solved. If not, take the following steps: 1. Right click on the icon "MY COMPUTER" then select "MANAGE" from the menu that appears. 2. In the left hand column of the window that appears select "SERVICES AND APPLICATIONS". 3. Double click on SERVICES. 4. In the right hand column look at the state of RPC services and avast! Pro Antivirus. 5. If one of the services is set to "automatic start up," then change it so it is (right click on the service and select PROPERTIES. Select AUTOMATIC for the TYPE OF START UP). Restart the computer after making this change. 6. If the services were already set to "automatic start up," check the service's status. If it has not been "started up," try to start it up (right click and select START UP). 7. If the service cannot be started up, your installation could be corrupt. Try and repair the installation of avast! Pro by doing the following: Click on START UP - CONTROL PANEL - ADD or DELETE PROGRAMS - avast! Pro Antivirus - EDIT/DELETE and select REPAIR. This solution can only be used on Windows NT, 2000, XP, Vista and 2003 operating systems.

This can happen if another antivirus program is installed on the system - the two programs are in conflict with each other and so the computer freezes. Precaution to take: You must never install two or more antivirus programs on the same computer. Solution: start up the system in safe mode and uninstall one of the antivirus programs. To start up your computer in safe mode do the following: 1. Start up Windows. If it is already running shut it down along with the computer. 2. Restart the computer. The computer starts to process a set of instructions known as Basic Input/Output system (BIOS). What is displayed depends on the BIOS manufacturer. Some computers display a progress bar referring to the word BIOS. Others don't display any indication that the process is underway. 3. Once BIOS has finished charging, being to tap the F8 key on your keyboard. Continue to do this until Windows advanced options menu appears. If you start tapping the F8 key too soon some computers will show the message "keyboard error." To resolve this, restart the computer and try again. 4. Move to and select the safe mode option by using the arrow keys on the keyboard and then press enter.

This is a problem with Internet Explorer not avast! Pro. Update Internet Explorer by using Windows Update and the problem will disappear.
|

Specify your connection type (dial-up connection or permanent connection) in avast! Pro's settings, in the section "update (connections)". The problem should then disappear.

First of all, try and manually update avast! Pro. If this update is successful the problem will be resolved and the next time an update is available, the automatic update should work. If the manual update results in the same error, it will be necessary to uninstall avast! Pro and download the newest version and install it.

After installing avast! Pro, your firewall could warn you that avast! Pro is trying to connect to our servers to find updates for the virus database and the program. You should allow Avast! Pro to connect otherwise the update function will not work. Here is some useful information: 1) The following Avast! Pros components should be authorised to connect to the Internet: avast! Pro.setup avast!ProXX.setup ("XX" representing the numbers) aswUpdSv.exe ashWebSv.exe 2) How does the update service work? Firstly, avast! Pro tries to detect if your computer is connected to the Internet - it sends a "Ping" (message) to one of our servers and waits for a response. If there is no response to the "Ping" sent, avast! Pro reattempts to connect to the server every 40 seconds. If the connection is successful, avast! Pro connects to our server and checks if there are any new updates available. If there are, avast! Pro downloads and installs them. If not avast! Pro waits 4 hours and again tries to connect to check if there are any updates. In short: avast! Pro detects an internet connection every 40 seconds and looks for updates every 4 hours. 3) Optimisation for dial-up internet connections. If you only use a dial up internet connection, there is another way of checking if your computer is connected or not. avast! Pro can work out the connection status from the modem status - so it does not connect to our servers every 40 seconds. To set up avast! Pro in this way, follow these steps: 1. With Notepad, open the file avast! Pro4.INI which can be found in (C:PROGRAM FILESALWIL SOFTWAREavast! Pro4DATA). 2. Find the section [InetWD]. If this section does not exist, create it. 3. In this section, insert the line: UseRAS= 4. Save the file and restart your computer. NOTE: Your version of avast! Pro must be version 4.0.172 or newer 4) Optimisation for permanent connections. If your computer is permanently connected to the internet, you can let avast! Pro know so that it can bypass connection checks. To do this follow these steps: 1. With Notepad, open the file avast! Pro4.INI which can be found in (C:PROGRAM FILESALWIL SOFTWAREavast! Pro4DATA). 2. Find the section [InetWD]. If this section does not exist, create it. 3. In this section, insert the line: AssumeAlwaysConnected=1 4. Save the file and restart your computer. NOTE: Your edition of avast! Pro must be 4.0.172 or newer.

Avast! Pro needs to change the settings in this way in order to check your email in Windows 95/98/ME. This does not prevent you from sending or receiving emails. If your email is not working, try the following: 1. Close Outlook Express (or the email provider you are using). 2. Start up "Email assistant" (or the email provider you are using), and specify server addresses and passwords (if you do not know the appropriate values, ask your ISP). 4. Check that the account is working (attention, your email is not protected at this point). 5. Close Outlook Express (or the email provider that you are using) (very important!!!) 6. Start up "protection assistant" once more. 7. Select "manually configure protection". 8. Select "I do not use MS Outlook..." 9. Follow the instructions. 10. At the end, you can start up Outlook Express again (or the email provider you use). The POP and SMTP server addresses will be changed and your login (user name) will be changed but it will work.

The problem is caused by incompatability between avast! Pro antivirus and "MSN Desktop Search" application. We are conducting research to try and resolve this problem. Until the problem is resolved, the only thing you can do is disactivate "MSN toolbar" in Outlook.

No, avast! Pro has not been infected. Viruses are placed in this folder by default when you select the option "move/rename" from the list of actions for an infected file. If you find viruses in this folder it shows that these files were found to be infected and you chose to "MOVE/RENAME" them therefore avast! Pro moved them into the aforementioned folder (and changed their file extensions to .vir, so that they could not be opened accidently.)

Many modern viruses fiddle with the sender's address. Therefore it can seem that the infected email, sent by an unknown person, has come from your address. We can't do anything about this, but we recommend that you keep your email address quite secret to reduce the risk of it being used in such a way. If you regularly distribute your email address or fill in forms online, you are more exposed to this risk.

The virus detected by avast! Pro was not found on your computer. It was intercepted by avast! Pro's web shield which scans all files downloaded via the HTTP protocol before saving them on the computer drive. As it is not possible to delete a virus which is found on an internet server, the only possiblity in this case is to drop the connection with the server containing the virus.
|
|
|
26 :

The web shield is a new service which has been part of avast! Pro since version 4.6. This service scans all HTTP communication with Web servers. It acts like an HTTP proxy on your PC. All communication passes through this service and downloaded data is checked for viruses. The browser only receives safe content and malicious content is blocked before being saved to the computer drive or run.
|
|
|
27 :
|
Absolutely. Always give this process access because it is through this process that your browser views Web pages. This service has the same requirements as your browser, above all it must be able to access the internet through the TCP protocol on port 80. If your firewall protects local communication, it is also necessary to allow avast! Pro to act like a server and accept communications through port 12080.

Under certain circumstances, it is necessary to bypass the transparent web shield and to manually configure items. This includes the following situations: If you use ZoneAlarm and the privacy control is activated. The current version of web shield's transparent proxy is compatible with ZoneAlarm's privacy control. - OR - if you use Windows 95/98/ME. The web shield's transparent proxy only runs on operating systems based on NT technology. The Proxy server settings for Internet Explorer when you use a Broadband connection and/or an internet connection through a local network (LAN). Watch this instruction video or follow these steps: 1. Start up Internet Explorer. 2. Select Tools Internet Options from the main menu. 3 Click on the connections tab. 4 Click on the button network settings... (in the section local network settings) (LAN)... 5. Check the option use a proxy server for your local network (LAN) 6. Write localhost in the address field (or alternatively you can enter the IP address 127.0.0.1 which is the same as localhost.) 7. Enter 12080 in the Port field. 8. Confirm by clicking OK. The Proxy server settings for Internet Explorer when you use a dial up internet connection. Follow these steps: 1. Start up Internet Explorer. 2. Check the option use a proxy server for this connection. 6. Write localhost in the field address (or alternatively you can enter the IP address 127.0.0.1 which is the same as localhost.) 7. Enter 12080 in the Port field. 8. Confirm by clicking OK. Please note: if you are using multiple connections, you must set up the address and port of the local proxy for each connection separately. Settings of the proxy server for Firefox. Watch the instruction video. The settings of the proxy server for all other browsers (Maxthon, Opera...) please read browser documentation to find instructions on how to set up a proxy server. All the main web browsers on the market have this capacity.)

For Windows 95/98/ME, you must set up your web browser so that it passes through the Web Shield.

avast! Pro has probably been blocked by your firewall. You must set up the firewall so that it allows the process ASHWEBSV.EXE (or ASWWEBSV.EXE) to access the Internet through port 80 and to act like a server which accepts LOCALHOST communications on port 12080.

The only processes that are known not to cause any problems are filtered by Web Shield. This includes common browsers and lots of other tools identified as being compatible with Web Shield. Sadly, your Proxy HTTP program is probably not on this list. You can however add it manually: 1. In notepad open the file C:PROGRAM FILESALWIL SOFTWAREavast! Pro4DATAavast! Pro4.INI 2. Find the section [WebScanner] 3. Add the following line to this section: OptinProcess=my_proxy.exe where « my_proxy.exe » is the name of the process to be added. If the line "OptinProcess" is already present, you can add the process to the end of the line in this way: OptinProcess=my_proxy.exe, my_browser.exe 4. Restart Web Shield. Please note: Web Shield scans all HTTP communication. If your proxy does not use this protocol (used to encrypt communications, or as an "accelerator") do not use this method. Question: My Internet Service Provider insists that I use its own HTTP Proxy to access the Internet. I must specify in Internet Options the following Proxy "proxy.monfai.fr", Port 3128. How do I get Web Shield to work in this situation? Response: On Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 systems do the following: 1. Click on the blue "a" icon in the taskbar. 2. In the window "avast! Pro resident scanner" click on the button "details." 3. Find the Web Shield icon and double click on it. 4. In the field "redirected HTTP port" specify the ports of your Internet Service Provider's proxy. If the Proxy can also be found on your computer (localhost), uncheck the option "ignore local communication". On Windows 95/98/ME systems do the following: 1. In Notepad open the file C:PROGRAM FILESALWIL SOFTWAREavast! Pro4DATAavast! Pro4.INI 2. Find the section [WebScanner]. 3. Add the following lines to this section: UpstreamProxyHost=proxy.monfai.fr UpstreamProxyPort=3128 (The values « proxy.monfai.fr » and « 3128 » are examples only, replace them with the real values of your internet service provider.) 4. Restart Web Shield. 5. Set up your browser so that it uses Web Shield as its Proxy (address: localhost, port 12080). Web Shield will now send any connection from your browser to the proxy server of your Internet Service Provider. Incoming documents will be scanned whilst they are being downloaded from the proxy of your Internet Service Provider.

Sometimes it is not possible to uninstall avast! Pro in the standard way - using "ADD" or DELETE programs" in the control panel. If this is the case, you can always use our uninstaller tool aswClear. Please note: since the introduction of avast! autoprotection system (versions 4.8 and newer), it is no longer possible to use aswClear without having disactivated avast!'s autoprotection system. This can be done in "program settings," in the "Troubleshooting" section - check the option "Disactivate avast! self defence module!." If the program settings are not accessible it remains possible to uninstall avast! using aswClear in Windows safe mode where the autoprotection system is disactivated by default. How to unistall our program using aswClear.exe:
1. Download aswClear.exe to your desktop.
2. Disactive avast!'s autoprotection system or restart Windows in safe mode.
3. Run the downloaded program.
4. If you installed avast in a different folder to the default folder find it by searching your drive with the button "...". (Please note: Pay attention! the contents of every folder you select will be deleted!).
5. Click on uninstall.
6. Restart your computer.
